EPCC FULL COURT BOCCE RULES: TUESDAY NIGHTS

●      The full court is 76' long x 9' wide.
  1. Matches will be played on the full court - it will not be divided!
    1. 6’ = Foul line, which is where the wooden sideboards meet the rail
    2. The center line is marked in white.
●      There are 3 45-minute games per night. Games start at:
  1. Round one: 5:30pm-6:15pm
  2. Round two: 6:20pm-7:05pm
  3. Round three: 7:10pm-7:55pm
  4. Round four: 8:00pm-8:45pm

Game Details:
●      The teams have 45 minutes to play.
  • Teams must be off the court at the end of their 45 minutes so the next teams can start play. Even if a game is not finished by the end of the 45 minute time limit, the game is still considered over, as to not take time away from the next teams’ game.
  • One game is played during that 45 minutes. Games are played to 21 points, win by 2 or 45 minutes, whichever comes first.
  • Points may be assessed if a team arrives late.
    1. For every 10 minutes a team is late, 2 points will be assessed, 20 minutes late is 4 points, and so on.
  • Scores must be recorded on the sheet provided by the EPCC team.
  • Whoever is the last team to play must return the balls, pallino, measuring tape and score sheet to the front desk. Also, please remember to unplug the lights!
The Season:
●      There will be regular season play, followed by playoffs and a final.
  • Regular season and playoffs consist of one game.
  • The Final will be a full match of 3 games, with a score of 21, win by 2 or 45 minute time limit (whichever comes first). An individual who is not a member of either team will ref the final.

Team structure:
  • Each team can have up to 5 players. All players play in each game, depending on that day’s team members’ attendance.
  • If a team can’t produce at least 2 players for a game, that team forfeits the game. We need 24 hours notice for game cancellation!
  • Two players from a team are on a court at any time. Each player must throw 2x per frame. They cannot give their turn to another teammate during the frame.
  • Individual players who start a frame must finish that frame. Substitutions can be made after that frame is complete, but not during, unless there is an injury.

During the Game:
  • Teams will determine between themselves who throws first vs. which color they want to be by an agreed-upon method, such as rock-paper-scissors, a coin toss, or simply deciding amongst themselves.
  • Starting the game:
    1. The pallino is thrown either by the team who won first throw, or by the team that won the previous point.
    2. The player who throws the pallino will throw the first ball.
    3. Both teams throw their first ball. Whichever team throws the ball that’s furthest away from the pallino rolls next. The rest of the throws for the game will occur in this same manner until all the balls are thrown.
  • Pallino Throw:
    1. The pallino is the first ball put into play and is thrown underhand from behind the pointing foul line. The pallino may bounce off the rails.
    2. The pallino must end up across the center line without hitting the backboard. The center line is marked with a white line.
      1. If a thrower fails to cross the center line or if they hit the backboard, they may throw again.
      2. If the second throw fails to place the pallino into play, it is placed on the court by the ref, in order to speed up play.
    3. Once the pallino is in play, it can be knocked anywhere on the court except back over the center line or out of the court.
    4. If the pallino is knocked off of the court or back in front of the center line after being put into play, the frame ends without any points being awarded to either team, and the game resumes from the opposite end with the same team tossing the pallino.
  • Each player’s feet must be behind the foot fault line, which is the point on the court at which the rail starts (6’ from the back wall).
  • The two players may either:
    1. Alternate their turns (Player A rolls the 1st and 3rd balls, while player B rolls the 2nd and 4th balls).
    2. Have an “opener” and “closer” (Player A rolls 1st and 4th, while Player B rolls 2nd and 3rd.)
    3. Have one player throw the first 2 balls, while the other player rolls the second 2.
    4. Each player must roll 2x. Players are not permitted to give their roll to their teammate.
  • Underhand or volo shots are OK.
  • Balls may hit, be bounced off of, or played against the rails.
  • A bocce ball cannot touch the back wall unless it makes contact with another ball in play or the pallino first.
    1. Any ball that hits the back wall without hitting another ball first is considered a deal ball and needs to be removed from the court.
    2. Hitting the rail before the back wall without touching another ball or the pallino still means that the ball must be removed from the court.
  • If a bocce ball goes out of bounds, it is considered a dead ball and is removed from play for that frame. This means that the ball cannot be used to score points in that particular frame.
  • If, during the course of play, the wrong team throws a ball, the opposing team decides if it should be retracted or not. The throwing order then resumes the proper throwing sequence.
  • Kissing: If a bocce ball is touching the pallino, it can be rewarded with 2 points if they remain touching at the end of the frame.
●      Games are played to 21 points, win by 2.

Miscellaneous:
  • No children are permitted in the bocce court area. No glass containers are permitted. Dogs are prohibited.
  • Measurement:
    • The person(s) doing the measuring should press and rotate balls and the pallino before measuring to mark their original position on the court surface. If a ball or pallino is accidentally moved while measuring, it is replaced to its original marked position.
    • The metal end of the tape measure should line up to the pallino, not the ball.
    • For accuracy, all measurements should be taken from the same point on both the pallino and the ball.
    • The use of feet to measure the distance of any activity on the courts is prohibited, because there is a high risk of a) inaccuracy, and b) either a ball or the pallino being moved. The center provides a measuring tape for accuracy.
      • The only exception to this rule is in the event that the pallino and ball are further away from each other than the measuring tape is long.
  • For safety reasons, no ball may be thrown higher than the overhead lights.
  • It is OK to ask your teammates about strategy for your next throw. However, in fairness to others, please be conscious of time.
  • Teams must self-referee, meaning whoever isn’t actively involved in the game will make the calls. A measuring tape will be provided by EPCC for the purpose of confirming the distance between pallino and balls.
  • Mercy rule (if ever needed, such as in finals): if one team is 6 points ahead of the other, the teams can agree to call a game early if both teams agree to do so. This way the teams can move ahead to the next game to save time.
  • Rain policy:
    • Puddle policy: If the EPCC staff sees puddles on the court at 2pm, all games will be cancelled for the evening.
    • In case of afternoon or evening rain forecasts: EPCC staff will use their judgement on whether or not to cancel games for that evening.
    • EPCC staff will send out an email to alert teams.

EPCC staff makes final calls on any rule that isn’t specifically laid out here.

EPCC SOCIAL LEAGUE/HALF COURT RULES: WEDNESDAY NIGHTS

●      The full court is 76' long x 9' wide.
  • The court will be divided into two 39’ halves.
  • The foul line is 4’ from the back of the court, and marked with a yellow line.
  • There are yellow markers on the court for the center line and foul lines.
●      The games are 30-minutes long.

Game Details:
  • The teams have 30 minutes to play.
  • Teams must be off the court at the end of their 30 minute time slot so the next teams can start play. Even if a game is not finished by the end of the 30 minute time limit, the game is still considered over, as to not take time away from the next teams’ game.
  • One game is played during that half hour. Games are played to 12 points, win by 2.
  • Points may be assessed if a team arrives late.
    • If a team is 5 or more minutes late, 2 points will be assessed. Any team more than 10 minutes late automatically forfeits.
  • Scores must be recorded on the sheet provided by the EPCC team.
  • Whoever is the last team to play must return the balls, pallino, measuring tape and score sheet to the front desk. Also, please remember to unplug the lights!
